In February, we observe National Children’s Dental Health Month. This year’s official slogan is, “Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile.” Did you know that your child gets more health benefits from tap water than from bottled water? It’s true! Why? The answer is simple – fluoride.
Fluoride is a natural element in water sources. Some communities add supplementary fluoride to their water to ensure optimum results. Unless you have your own well, your child is drinking in fluoride, which has proven benefits for oral health. In fact, research has shown that drinking water with fluoride can reduce your risk of tooth decay by 25%. Fluoride protects teeth by:
- Preventing cavities. Fluoride protects the surface of your child’s teeth from foods and sugars.
- Strengthening teeth. Fluoride absorbs into the teeth, making them stronger and more resistant to decay.
- Rebuilding weakened tooth enamel. Fluoride will help reverse the early stages of tooth decay.
- Preventing the softening of enamel. Fluoride neutralizes acid produced by plaque bacteria, which can soften tooth enamel.
It’s important to teach children the fundamentals of healthy dental care, including regular brushing and flossing. Let’s help our children develop smiles that will last a lifetime!
Speaking of a lifetime, our cherished dental hygienist, Kathy Kitchen, is retiring later this year after 40 years of caring for our teeth! You still have a week left to enter our Facebook contest to guess how many teeth she has cleaned throughout her career.
Good luck guessing!
