Everyone knows that brushing is an important part of your daily oral routine. But have you ever gone to the dentist, proud of how diligent you have been with your brushing, only to discover you have not been given a perfect bill of health? There are many things that could be causing problems for your teeth, but the most fundamental and basic necessity is brushing. Not only brushing regularly but also brushing properly. So take a look at some of our dos and don’ts of brushing and follow these simple rules to ensure you make the most of your brushing time.
DO aim your brush toward your gums at a 45-degree angle when brushing the fronts and backs of your teeth.
DON’T forget to brush all chewing surfaces using short, back and forth strokes.
DO take your time. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth for two full minutes at least twice a day. So don’t rush through things, set a timer or sing a catchy song to make sure you take your time and do it right.
DON’T use too much pressure. Sometimes in our effort to be diligent, we become to rough, but pushing too hard can cause wear and damage on the enamel that will work against your goal.
DO replace your brush regularly. The ADA recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. This applies to brush heads on electric toothbrushes too. But keep in mind this is just a guideline, keep an eye on the brush bristles and if they begin to fray, it’s time for a new one.
DON’T forget your tongue. Carefully clean your tongue each time you brush your teeth, this will help clear away harmful bacteria and will prevent bad breath.
DO consult your dentist or dental hygienist. We are here to help support your oral health. If you are concerned about your brushing technique we can demonstrate and guide you through the process to help you maintain a bright, smile-worthy brushing routine.
